It’s been a few years since five young Amish or Mennonite men and women left home to pursue the English world and to be frank not a lot of them are doing so well.
Sabrina had apparently lost her home and was forced to live in her car so her life pretty much went downhill for a while after she lost her daughter because social services felt she was unfit and unfortunately she had begun taking drugs just to function. However, Sabrina appeared to be a better place now on tonight’s episode of “Return to Amish” and she’s doing everything possible to try and get her daughter Oakley back. Oakley had been given to a family after she had been removed from her mother’s care so there’s a bit of checklist that Sabrina has to complete of what she should do in order to regain her rights as a mother and so far she’s been doing them. She has to remain clean and it seems like she’s trying to do that what with the picture of her daughter on the fridge as well as some articles on heroin addiction. And that’s been helping her.
But Sabrina’s rapid decline wasn’t just in losing her daughter and using heroin. It seems that some of her friends were also giving her a wide berth and were distancing themselves from someone they didn’t want around their family. So naturally now that Sabrina was clean, she wanted to talk and see what she could do to win her friends back though her timing might have been off. Sabrina had heard from Rebecca because her once a very good friend had called her out of the blue about Mary being in trouble. And so Sabrina had gone back to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to offer her support yet things eventually got around to the problems in her relationship with Abe and Rebecca.
Abe and Rebecca have been married for three years now and they have two kids however things haven’t been easy for them either. Abe apparently got works as a truck driver so he tends to be on the road five out of ten days and sadly that has put a strain on their marriage if not their whole family. Yet, the two have been working it out so their main concern has been Mary. Mary’s relationship with the Amish church has gone back and forth a lot of times, but it seems the church were prepared to put their foot down with Mary. They were apparently considering whether or not they should banish her and banishment was a lot worse than shunned.
Shunned was just them ignoring her for sometimes while banishment was basically declaring her dead to them. Her family that was still in the church had to act as if she died. So Mary would have to give up on whatever relationship she has with most of her family. She couldn’t contact or acknowledge her family members and her husband for one was going to be in an awkward position because he would be regarded as a widow even as Mary continued to live with. But in spite of everything that has happened, Mary did not want to be banished. She wanted to stay in Punxsutawney and felt that she wouldn’t be able to if she got shunned.
So Rebecca and Abe had reached out to Sabrina and Jeremiah who seems to have turned his life around and the couple had asked that they come back to Punxy to support Mary during the trying time. But it wasn’t long before Sabrina and Rebecca butt heads. Mary had naturally been curious about how everyone was doing so she had asked around and the others got a chance to hear about Abe’s new job that was pretty harsh on his family. Only Sabrina and Jeremiah both felt that Abe shouldn’t be too quick to give up on the job that was paying him good money.
Abe was making more and that was good for his family because he was able to provide them with things he never used to. Yet, Rebecca wants Abe to quit and they became clear to the others when she said that they had come to a decision though never allowed Abe a chance to talk for himself. So Sabrina had tried to voice that maybe Abe should be allowed to voice his opinion and that in turn had caused friction between her and Rebecca. Rebecca felt that neither Jeremiah nor Sabrina should judge what was best for her family so she acted nice to their face and later deleted Sabrina from all her social media accounts.
Sabrina though hadn’t figured out how bad things were between them until after Mary was banished and she had offered Mary her help in moving to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Lancaster has a great Amish and Mennonite community so Mary would be surrounded by something familiar and the move would also offer Abe some more possibilities for employment. So Lancaster had seemed like a great idea and Sabrina for one was all excited about the others moving closer to her yet she had been hurt by what Rebecca did and had finally confronted Rebecca about the tension when they later saw each other.
Sabrina had wanted to know why Rebecca did that and she also wanted to know why it felt like they didn’t care when she was going through so much. But while Rebecca wasn’t being as vocal as she normally could be, Abe had answered some questions in his confessional. He said that he and Rebecca had tried to help Sabrina before when she was down on her luck and that Sabrina had thrown everything they did for her away. The couple had apparently helped Sabrina move to Punxy and even got her job there yet Sabrina had barely lasted a week in Punxy before she returned to Lancaster and fell back into her old lifestyle.
However, Sabrina has said that she’s better now and that she would have preferred to talk them before they dropped her. So what Sabrina was looking for was an explanation. Sabrina wanted to know why they dropped her and how come they never said that they were done with her before they ignored her? Sabrina had been through a lot and the only person to check in was Jeremiah while she didn’t even get a text from Rebecca who was supposed to be her best friend. And yet the truth of the situation was that Sabrina reminded the couple of Andy.
Andy or Andrew which is his full name is Abe’s brother and he’s been in and out of trouble because of addiction for over nearly half of his life. So neither Abe and Rebecca had wanted to go through the same thing with Sabrina and have to deal with her addiction as well. They had tried to help and that hadn’t worked. Sabrina had thrown their help away and she had also relapsed not long after leaving rehab the first time around so there was a reason some felt like they couldn’t quite trust her just yet.
And while Sabrina has done a lot, she hasn’t really paid any dues. She’s upset that her former best friend didn’t contact her during her latest rough patch but ignores the part she played in Rebecca wanting to distance herself and blames Rebecca for their relationship now. So to Abe that was Andy all over again. Andy had recently been released from the halfway house so his family was hoping that Andy would realize his mistakes and turn his life around. Only Andy was still the same old Andy. He went to prison and blamed it on the system instead of taking responsibility for breaking the law.
So it was clear that Andy was going to be making the same mistakes though Mary still had to try. Mary had told Andy that his wife Chapel wasn’t good for his recovery so she had wanted him to distance himself from Chapel. However, Andy was very adamant that Chapel was his wife and that he loves her so he told Mary that no one was going to be allowed to come between them. And that had hurt Mary because she knew that Chapel was no longer a good person. Chapel had apparently lied about a lot of things and it seems she has done some other stuff to make Mary doubt her character.
Mary usually doesn’t want to write anyone off. So Mary wasn’t even considering an official divorce even as she was thinking about moving away from her husband Chester who was staying in Punxy to be near their family there. Yet, Mary felt differently about Chapel and Andy’s marriage. She said that Chapel was bad for him and that it was only a matter of time before Andy relapsed with his wife in the picture. And so the one thing Mary wanted more than anything was for Andy to give up on Chapel altogether.
Though that wasn’t happening and Sabrina was taking the fact that both Rebecca and Abe needed time away from her to mean that she wasn’t good enough for them. So instead of reflecting, Sabrina decided to lash out. She had gone to see Jeremiah and she voiced to him that Rebecca just couldn’t get it. She said that Rebecca had it easy because she had Abe and Abe’s entire family supporting her and so she never had to struggle like Sabrina did. And seeing how Sabrina has been taking Rebecca’s withdrawal to heart, Jeremiah tried in his own way to help her yet it seems he did more harm than good when he got both Rebecca and Abe to agree to a sit-down with Sabrina.
He tried to get them all talking and all that led to a fight between him and Rebecca and Abe. But Kate has so far stayed out of the picture because she was completing a very important internship with a fashion designer in New York. So we don’t get to see her weigh in on this fight until later on in the season.
THE END!
