The Revenant, set in 1823, features Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass who actually existed. The film begins with Glass and his wife peacefully sleeping as he is heard promising his son in a foreign language that he will always take care of him. Time is set forward and Hugh is seen with his son, who is much older now, hunting.
After vicious attack to their hunting team, Hugh is seen out in the woods hunting when he is violently attacked by a bear. This scene in particular is one of the many scenes where you can really see DiCaprio’s magnificent acting skills. His hunting team is held back when Hugh goes ill and cannot bare to move a single bone. Fitzgerald, who throughout the film has not been too fond of Glass, suggests killing him to finish once and for all taking care of the ill man. The captain is quick to disagree and sets a reward to the men who can take their separate ways with Hugh and take good care of him. Hugh’s son, who’d been there for him throughout his coma-like-state, volunteers as well as Hawk, and Fitzgerald; the man who wanted to kill him.
The movie is set mostly in freezing cold Canada. All throughout the movie DiCaprio faces many challenges as he states: “I can name 30 or 40 sequences that were some of the most difficult things I’ve ever had to do. Whether it’s going in and out of frozen rivers, or sleeping in animal carcasses, or what I ate on set. [I was] enduring freezing cold and possible hypothermia constantly.” Watching DiCaprio sleep in a horses carcass was very cringeworthy but showed his true commitment to the film.
The scenery for the movie was absolutely beautiful and added a lot of emotion to the film. The actors really were in constant risk of hypothermia. From having to swim in freezing cold lakes, to camping out in the snow, it all added to the movie in a wonderful way.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, and Will Poulter played amazing rolls in this movie. Each of them truly have the chance of being nominated for an Oscar. This could really be DiCaprio’s chance of finally winning the Oscar he truly deserves.
If you haven’t already, The Revenant is truly a great, yet gruesome movie to watch. If you’ve seen it already, let us know what you think on Twitter @CelebMix!
