    Sam Billings Facts

  • A child prodigy, Sam grew up playing multiple sports including cricket, soccer, tennis, racquets, squash, and rugby. He has often credited his time playing racquets with helping him develop his cricket batting skills, particularly his hand-eye coordination.
  • He had even been offered a trial with English soccer giants Tottenham Hotspur F.C. after he had scored a hat-trick of goals against the team’s academy side, playing for the under-14 team of Corinthian F.C., an amateur soccer club based in Fawkham, Kent.
  • When he began keeping wickets for Kent County Cricket Club in the County Championship, near the end of the 2013 domestic season, he had broken Geraint Jones’ (who had represented England (2004–2006) and Papua New Guinea (2012–2014) in international cricket) string of 115 consecutive County Championship appearances for Kent County Cricket Club.
  • During the 2016 season, he had become just the 2nd Kent wicket-keeper to have taken 7 catches in an innings and just the 10th player to have claimed 9 dismissals in a first-class match.
  • As a wicket-keeper, his first senior match for England was a T20I against Pakistan in Dubai in November 2015. He had scored his maiden international half-century in that match as England went on to win by 14 runs. He was named the ‘Player of the Match’ for his performance.
  • In October 2019, he was named England’s vice-captain and first-choice wicket-keeper for the T20I leg of the team’s tour of New Zealand. However, he could score just 34 runs in 5 innings in the T20I series and was not selected in England’s limited-overs team for their next series.
  • He has served as an ambassador for the Lord’s Taverners, the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity.
  • In October 2017, he had participated in an exhibition T20 match that was played to mark the opening of the Rwanda Cricket Stadium in the capital city of Kigali. He was later named the patron of cricket in Rwanda.
