Winona Ryder’s recent Netflix project, Stranger Things, is a successful hit that has everyone on the internet talking. Ryder plays a woman named Joyce Byers, whose son goes missing in the town of Hawkins, Indiana. Due to the disappearance of her son, friends and family risk their lives to find him.
Winona recently did an interview with New York Magazine, where she discussed her Stranger Things character.
When asked about playing a mother on the show, she states, “I know nothing could compare, and I haven’t had that experience, but when my niece was born, I felt like I would jump in front of a car and die for this little person I didn’t even know yet.”
Regarding Joyce Byers, Winona says that she has “tremendous compassion for her.” She feels that her character had big dreams for her life, but then she became a mother and had to put those dreams aside. She adds:
There’s a line in the show where someone says, ‘She’s had anxiety problems in the past.’ A lot of people have picked up on that, like, ‘Oh, you know, she’s crazy.’ And I’m like, ‘Okay, wait a second, she’s struggling.’ Two kids, deadbeat dad, working her ass off. Who wouldn’t be anxious?
Winona then relates Joyce to herself. She calls herself “supersensitive” and that it’s “not a bad thing.” Ryder states, “I’m so sick of people shaming women for being sensitive or vulnerable. It’s so bizarre to me.” She says that the word “sensitive” is frequently used as a bad word, and has the connotation of being either weak or crazy.
